Let Our Expert Team Handle Your Water, Sewer & Drainage

Drainage versus Sewer

The difference between drain and sewer is that a drain is a pipe that serves a single building, conveying wastewater away into a sewer. One type of drain is a lateral drain and it is usually positioned outside the boundary of a building, connecting with the drains from other buildings to become a sewer.

While sewers are the underground networks of pipes that help in carrying sewage (wastewater and excrement), wastewater and surface water run-off, from drains to treatment facilities or disposal points.

However, some buildings have drains that connect to a septic tank, cesspool or a treatment plant instead of a sewer.

Types of Utilities

  • Reinforced Concrete Pipe (RCP)

Reinforced concrete pipe, or RCP, is one of the standard materials used in storm sewer systems, sanitation systems, and large irrigation projects. Reinforced concrete offers high strength and durability at competitive costs and is the primary alternative to high-density polyethylene plastic pipe in many applications.

  • Ductile Iron Pipe

Is a pipe made of ductile cast iron commonly used for potable water transmission and distribution. It’s a common industry piping for water and wastewater systems. Ductile Iron has all of the attractive qualities of cast iron like corrosion resistance and machinability, its additional toughness and strength add to more dependability.

  • Polyvinyl Chloride Pipe (PVC)

PVC pipes used for water mains perform the best of any commercially available pipes on the market today. The most popular reason for using PVC pipe in underground plumbing is that it is flexible, lightweight and easy to handle. This makes it easy to work with. Also, it’s durable and cost-effective, which helps keep the maintenance costs low.
